Concept and reason

Grignard reagent acts as a nucleophile, attacks the electrophilic carbon after the ring opening to form an intermediate metal alkoxide salt. Acidic work up converts the metal alkoxide salt into an alcohol.

The substituents on the epoxide will decide the alcohol formed in the reaction. The ring opening of the epoxide occurs from the less substituted side and the attack of the nucleophile occurs on the same side.

The general formula of a Grignard reagent is ${\rm{RMgX}}$ , in which R is an alkyl group, ${\rm{Mg}}$ is a metal, and X is a halogen. The alkyl group acts as a nucleophile.

Reaction of epoxides with a Grignard reagent followed by the hydrolysis forms an alcohol (new ${\rm{C}} - {\rm{O}}$ bond in the product).
