Explain how a superantigen toxin non-specifically stimulates T cells.
Why does non-specific stimulation of T cells make a person sick?
Explain the molecular mechanisms by which quorum sensing regulates TSST-1 expression.
How do superantigens promote immune evasion? Describe impacts on B cells and T cells
Why is toxic shock syndrome associated with high absorbency tampons and menstruation?
1. Superantigen are bacterial proteins that are not processed and presented by Major histocompatibility complex instead they form contact with the MHC 2 molecule on APC and T cell receptor on T cells causing activation of T cell. As no presentation and processing of any antigen occurs so they are activated non specifically. 2. Non specific activation makes a person sick because excessive production of cytokines occurs which causes inflammation like IL-2, IFN - gamma and Tumor Necrosis factor -alpha. 3. Bacteria produces many immune evasion factors that target various components of host immune defense. These superantigens cause the overactivation of B and T cell due to which they release more cytokines which are inflammatory. 4. Tampons saturated with blood provide an environment for rapid growth of bacteria where they release toxin which directly gets into bloodstream due to the presence of bloodstream in uterus
