Question

It is exceedingly rare for all the Hardy-Weinberg assumptions to be met in nature.

It is exceedingly rare for all the Hardy-Weinberg assumptions to be met in nature. Evolution is a change in allele frequencies in a population over time, so a population in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium is not evolving.

Match the following terms with the most correct statement. Each of these relates to evolutionary forces or conditions that violate the Hardy- Weinberg assumptions. (Each term only matches to one statement).

Genetic drift - Migration - Inbreeding - 4 Mutation - Natural selection - Nonrandom mating

a. Does not normally change allele frequencies.

b. Alleles may disappear from a population simply by chance.

c. Differential reproduction of genotypes that leads to evolution.

d. Responsible for the origin of new genetic variation in a species.

e Movement of genes between populations.

f. Increases the frequency of homozygotes in a population compared to the results of random mating.

Answers:

Genetic drift - b. Alleles may disappear from the population simply by chance.

Genetic drift is random by chance process which can lead to allele changes in a very short period of time.

Migration - e. Movement of genes between populations.

Migration is the movement of a population which means the genes and their characteristics are also getting introduced to a different place.

Inbreeding - f. Increases the frequency of homozygotes in a population compared to the results of random mating.

When genetically closely related organisms are bred together then it is observed to increase frequency of homozygotic characteristics in a population. This practice of mating genetically close organisms is referred to as inbreeding

Mutation - d. Responsible for the origin of new genetic variation in species.

Mutation gives rise to changes in the DNA which can alter and bring genetic variation among a species. Without mutation, evolution could not occur.

Natural selection - c. Differential reproduction of genotypes leads to evolution.

Natural selection is the differential survival and reproduction of organisms which leads to evolution as fit organisms and its characteristics are able to survive while the unfit organisms and its characteristics are eliminated.

Nonrandom mating - a. Does not normally change allele frequencies.

Nonrandom mating has no effect on allele frequency.
