Describe and explain the relationship between reward and punishment and justice. What are the elements of each, and to what extent do you agree with them? Answer in detail and provide examples.
Answer:
Rewards: Any object or event that may be desirable and satisfying to someone can make rewards for that individual. For example – money, fame, respect, love, eatable, appreciation, approval etc. Normally if a rewarding event is contingent upon a particular behaviour, it increases the likelihood of occurrence of the behaviour (law of effect in psychology). For example if a student is appreciated by a teacher in class for answering a question the student is likely to read further and answer question asked by teacher in future classes.
Punishment: Any objet or event that is undesirable or lead to feeling of dissatisfaction to an individual can be conceived as a punishment. Examples- reprimand by a teacher, insulting someone in a group, failure in test etc.. Whenever a punishing event follows a behaviour, it reduces the likelihood repeat occurrence of that behaviour (law of effect in psychology). For example if a teacher reprimand a student in class for doing poorly in test may lead the student to not repeat another poor show.
Justice: mean administration of fairness that may be judged various different perspectives and criteria prevailing in a society. When two persons in conflict approach a the court of law wherein both are trying to establish their ownership on a piece of property. The court will gather an devaluate the relevant information make a judgement using the legal norms related to ownership of property and finally deliver a judgement about who should own the same.
Reward and punishment are value neutral concepts and both are relevant to bringing about behavioral change among animals and human beings. However, justice is a value-laden concept that involves evaluation in terms of morality, fairness or being right or wrong. Rewards and punishment are more like behavioral tools/techniques which be used for both enhancing and decreasing the just behaviours and decisions among people. Justice often involves reward and punishment both when two parties in conflict seek justice. One of them is rewarded and other is punished.
