Question

Crystal Field Question.

Between Ni(H20)s2+ ; Ni(en)32+; and lowest and why? Cu(CN)42- which has highest splitting and which has
I understand that octahedral shapes have larger splitting energies then in tetrahedral complexes. And it would take more energy to split more electrons. So would the order be from Highest to Lowest: B>A>C where A, B, C are the compounds listed in their respective orders.

Answer #1

octahedral is more splitting compare to tetrahedral due to more repulsion between ligand electrons and metal electrons.

so Cu is lesser splitting .

in compare to en and H2O   en causes more splitting. so order is as follows.

Ni(en)3+2    >   Ni(H2O)6+2   > Cu(CN)4-2
