Describe what is meant by enterohepatic circulation.
Even if anyone does not know about the Enterohepatic Circulation, it can be guessed by the root words.
The word Entero: Intestine. and Hepatic: Liver. So we can guess that it is a kind of circulation that is taking place between the Intestine and Liver.
Definition: It is a kind of circulation of chemicals from the Intestine to the hepatic portal system and then to liver and again back to the intestine.
As we know that liver breaks down certain chemicals and drugs, which is then transported to gall bladder and is later secreted into the Small intestine. The same chemical is absorbed and is sent to the Hepatic portal system. This is referred as Enterohepatic circulation and is used in diagnosis of toxins or rate of metabolization of a particular drug.
