Answer #1

Firstly, I shall brief the concept of child-rearing practices. The child-rearing practice is the way by which one or both parents adopt different ways in handling all sorts of concerns and personality of their child. The first 6 years with respect to a child is one which is very crucial in building up his/her personality and child-rearing practice made during these years by parents plays a significant role as well.

There are mainly 3 main functions associated with child-rearing practices. They are as follows

  • Child discipline
  • Child care
  • General child-rearing attitude

Child discipline: The purpose of discipline in life is to allow one to be flexible enough in following all rules of the society to which he belongs. Every child when growing up will show several behaviors that are inappropriate. Based on the type of parenting such as authoritative, permissive and authoritarian, they adopt different methods which generally go between reward and punishment system as to make the child more disciplined. For example when a child is rolling in the floor while in a public place such as a mall, a parent would either make the child understand the point that only bad children do such behavior and that he should not as he is a good one or might offer him a chocolate if he does not do the behavior next time in mall or may punish him by stating that he will not be brought to mall again if he repeats the behavior.

Child care: It is the mother who plays a key role with respect to her child's care. Several functions are performed by her such as weaning, clothing, toilet training, etc. She must be patient and experienced in various skills to understand all the concerns of her child. The immunization chart is one that must be well followed by a mother or any of the parents. This is an example of child care as well.

General child-rearing attitude: As far as child-rearing practices are considered, the mother is the one who is given more importance in most of the cultures. Hence, the attitude of mothers in child-rearing practice is one which is very much important. The most important issue faced here is the poverty and ignorance from mother which completely changes the personality of her child compared to what he was likely expected to be if given appropriate care. Some women who are mothers believe that breastfeeding will reduce their self beauty and charm. Therefore, they avoid the same and replaces it with alternatives which in the long term run is seen to affect the child's health by having poor immunity.
