Jaclyn is 23 years old and is four months pregnant. She is visiting a comprehensive "wrap around services" health clinic for prenatal care for the first time. The medical team advises prenatal nutritional counseling and vitamins, and assesses her pregnancy as "progressing normally" at this stage. However, she has been referred to you because in the health assessment she responded that she has "always" consumed one or two drinks, almost every day, when she comes home from work to unwind from the stress of her job. There are also social events on weeknights and weekends with family and friends that typically involve light to moderate drinking.

3. Identify the positive and strengths aspects of Jaclyn's situation.

Answer #1

1) Jacklyn case involves the drinking of alcohol which can be considered dangerous as she is drinking during the stages of her pregnancy. There are chances of affecting the stages of the development of the embryo inside the fertilized uterus of the mother. This is a relevant fact which can be analyzed and interpreted in detail.

2) There are chances of developing the fetal alcohol syndrome which affects around 15% of the females in USA as a consequence of drinking. There are chances of developing behavioral problems after the intake of excessive alcohol in parties on weeknights and weekends. Alcohol is a potential teratogen which was described by Paul Lemoine in 1967. There are chances of developing alcohol related birth disorder and alcohol related neurodevelopmental disorder affecting the health of the child leading to several abnormalities. There are chances of development social and occupational malfunctioning in the nervous system of the child. Alcohol crosses the blood barrier in the fetus and causes the lowering of the levels of alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme in the child with destruction of the organs present in the body of the mother. There can be a decrease in the quantity of breast milk of the mother after a significant intake of alcohol.

3) The strengths and the positive of the Jaclyn situation are as follows like the medical diagnosis report of doctor physician who explained that the pregnancy is progressing in a normal way with no abnormality observed in the development of the embryo of the child inside the uterus. She is an occasional drinker of alcohol as observed in the scientific study.

4) Motivational interviewing is a process in which a person becomes a caregiver for the client without getting involved any kind of argument and controversy. It is a process of accepting the client with the mental problems from which the patient is suffering. There is development of an emphatic relationship with the client which involves the process of reflective listening to the requirements of the client. There is support provided to the client to overcome the problem of the intake of excessive alcohol. Awareness is provided about the implications of drinking alcohol and its harmful effects on the health of the patient.
