Vedic tradition talked if Varna system and divided whole population in four barns with each having a specific functional tole and social heirarchy. Brahmans were highest in heirarchy and meant to perform sacrifices and do studies. Then comes kshatriya who were warriors as well as ruler and come 2nd from top in heirarchy. Then comes vaishyas who were small businessmen or agriculturist and come 3rd. Shudra were untouchables t, and they served as servant .
All these varna was based usually on profession and not birth . But gradually caste system got strengthened and later used to be justified by citing division in vedic system in form of varna.
