Some have argued that the best approach to fight high tech crime is the use of deterrents. For instance, it has been argued that high-technology defenses such as intrusion detection, will decrease the likelihood that a website will be hacked. Do you think that deterrents would have a greater effect on high tech crime than they do on traditional crime? If so why or why not?

Answer #1

The high tech crimes are the form of cybercrimes, it is conducted by hacking other's computers, through entering into the system or private network and have unauthorized access to the other's all personal details. It can be done through sending viruses, by taking programs or data, or by damaging, etc.

The people who do hi-tech crimes can enter anybody's computer sitting at the other end of the world. It is difficult to catch the hidden culprit. There are many cases where the funds from other’s accounts are fraudulently transferred, the details are hacked and used to blackmail. The details of defense systems are hacked and leaked. Even the personal details of common people are hacked.

To escape from the hi-tech crimes many devices are formed and technologies are used, but it was always noticed that the hacker is always a step ahead.

Intrusion detection is a device or a system that is used to detect any malicious or suspicious activities taking place. There are usually four methods commonly used these are 1. NID( Network intrusion detection system), 2 PIDS (Perimeter Intrusion Detection System), 3. HIDS ( Host-based intrusion detection system, 4. VIDS (Virtual Machine based Intrusion Detection System).

The traditional crime is the crimes where the criminal does an act that is against the law, like theft, burglary, murder, destroying property, etc the criminal if caught can be tried in the court and sentenced as per his crime by the court.

By incarcerating and keeping the criminals behind the bar and punishing them deter them from committing the crime again.

The cybercrime is also a crime unless the person is detected and there is an understanding between the two countries the thief cannot be punished by the law of the victim's country, it is valid for the traditional crime as well if the offender runs away to the foreign land and if there is no understanding of handing over the criminal although the crime is done locally the criminal cannot be tried although a case can be registered, he will be free on the foreign land.

If the cybercriminal is caught than by punishment he can be deterred from committing the crime that is equivalent to deterring a person who does traditional crimes.
