Q1: Do you think a decline in publicly funded scientific research effects the quality and objectivity of scientific research?

Decline in publicly funded scientific research definitely impacts the quality and objectivity of scientific research in a very adverse and negative way. Conducting any type of scientific research is quite expensive, organizing and setting the environment takes a lot of funding. Without funds it might become difficult to procure the essential apparatuses and other equipment, and also to hire the right kind of talent needed for the research. When a scientific research is being conducted by means of public funding, then the end goal will lead to genuine scientific growth and public wellness, so it provides a greater objectivity. Lack of public funding will dilute both the quality and objectivity of the scientific research and experiments.

Q2: Can you see the potential conflicts of interest that corporate funding of scientific research presents?

Corporate funding of scientific research is mostly done on a self-serving basis, usually in order to make profit and create benefit to the company who’s carrying out the research. It will be mainly in interest of the company and not the public in general. So, there lies a huge conflict of interest in corporate funding of scientific research. It would be self-centric to say the least.

Q3: How do you think scientific research should be funded and carried out in an open democratic society?

Scientific research must be funded by the government using public funds in an open democratic society. The reason is, the scientific researches thus conducted would be non-biased, in true spirit of science and also would be beneficial for the greater good of one and all including the public.
