After you eat a protein bar, define and describe the chemical reaction that links the individual amino acid together into new proteins that will be used by your individual cells

Inside individual cells, the individual amino acids can bond together into new proteins by forming a peptide bond. Simply, a peptide bond is a chemical bond that joins two and more amino acids together. We can define peptide bond as – ‘a covalent bond or chemical bond formed by joining the carboxyl group of one amino acid to the amino group of another with the removal of one molecule of water’.

We know that structurally all amino acids contain a central carbon atom surrounded by a hydrogen atom, one carboxyl functional group (-COOH), one amino group (-NH2) and one side chain R-group which is specific to each amino acid.

When two amino acids form a peptide bond, condensation reaction takes place. During condensation reaction, two amino acids approach each other, with the carboxylic group (-COOH) moiety of first amino acid comes near to the amino group (NH2) moiety of the second amino acid. It results in, losses of one hydrogen and oxygen from its carboxyl group and loses one hydrogen from its amino group (NH2) respectively. And, at the end of the reaction, produces one molecule of water (H2O) and two amino acids joined by a peptide bond (-CO-NH-) as shown in the figure below.
