Answer #1

1) The answer will be -(D) All of the above.

Intense exercise leads to elevated levels of 2,3- BPG. This increased level stabilizes the T state conformation which in turn makes it difficult for oxygen to bind to hemoglobin and are hence released to adjacent tissues. Thus, it causes allosteric inhibition of hemoglobin via binding of H+ ions.

2) The oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve plots the proportion of hemoglobin in it's oxygen-laden form on the Y-axis ( vertical axis) against the prevailing oxygen tension on the X axis ( horizontal axis). This curve makes us understand how our blood carries and releases oxygen to the surrounding cells. The curve shifts towards the right.Right shift shows decreased affinity of hemoglobin towards oxygen which may be caused due to high body temperature, increase in concentration of H+ ions, 2,3- BPG ( biphosphoglycerate) concentration or high carbon dioxide concentration. Hence, the correct answer is - (a) shift to the right.

Which of the following effects is NOT true? If stripped Hb is treated with 2,3-BPG, the O_2-binding curve for Hb will shift left. If stripped Hb is treated with 2,3-BPG and CO_2, the O_2-binding curve for Hb will mirror that of fully intact Hb. If stripped Hb is treated with CO_2, the O_2-binding curve for Hb will shift right. All of the listed effects are true.

    2) We discussed in class how the molecule 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (BPG) is an inhibitor of hemoglobin (Hb). Answer the following questions about BPG and its regulation of oxygen binding: a) Would BPG have any effect on myoglobin’s ability to bind or release oxygen? If so, describe how BPG would affect myoglobin. If not, why? b) Based on the observation that BPG binds preferentially to partially deoxygenated Hb, briefly explain (1-2 sentences) where BPG is most likely to be most effective on...
