In humans and mammals the sex is determined by the chromosomes X and Y. For female it will be two X chromosomes but for male it will be one X and one Y chromosome. Since males have only one X chromosome, if any trait in X is recessive, he will have recessive or diseased trait. On the other hand, females have 2 X chromosomes and thus may have dominant trait say W if it is WW or Ww. More over the X linked disease is seen more in males compared to females due to the presence of one copy of X chromosome in males.
