Consider a very small spacecraft in a circular orbit around the earth. Suppose it is in this orbit for some time, but then, instantaneously, the Earths mass suddenly becomes 50% smaller than it was previously. Determine the resulting orbit of the spacecraft and justify your answer. (note: assume that the only effect on the spacecraft is that it is subsequently moving in the gravitational field of a 50% less massive Earth, and its mass and velocity are the same just before and just after the mass is removed from Earth).

The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft has a special orbit, located between the Earth and the Sun along the line joining them, and it is always close enough to the Earth to transmit data easily. Both objects exert gravitational forces on the observatory. It moves around the Sun in a near-circular orbit that is smaller than the Earth's circular orbit. Its period, however, is not less than 1 yr but just equal to 1 yr. Show that its distance...

    2. To get from Earth to Saturn as economically and quickly as possible, spacecraft make use of an elliptical transfer trajectory called the Hohmann transfer orbit. As shown in the diagram, below, Hohmann transfer facilitates a smooth transition between two planetary bodies in roughly circular orbits located on the same plane. For our solar system, this plane is known as the ecliptic. Using data you can find online for the orbits of Earth, Saturn and the Sun and assuming that...
