Homework (Ch 08)
The following graph represents the demand and supply for pinckneys (an imaginary product). The black point (plus symbol) indicates the pre-tax equilibrium. Suppose the government has just decided to impose a tax on this market; the grey points (star symbol) indicate the after-tax scenario.
Complete the following table, given the information presented on the graph.
Value Result Equilibrium quantity before tax Per-unit tax Price producers receive before tax 09 $
In the following table, indicate which areas on the previous graph correspond to each concept. Check all that apply.
Equilibrium quantity before tax occurs at the intersection point of demand and supply curve. Hence, the equilibrium quantity before tax is 4 units.
And equilibrium price is $5 at the intersection point of demand and supply curve.
Hence, the price received by producers before tax is $5 and price paid by the producers before tax is $5.
After tax:
After imposition of tax, equilibrium quantity is 2.5 units.
Price paid by buyers after tax for 2.5 units of output is $6.50
Price received by producers after tax for 2.5 units of output is $3.50
Per unit tax = Price paid by buyers after tax - Price received by producers after tax
=> Per unit tax = $6.50 - $3.50
=> Per unit tax = $3
