Sofia Gomez (S.G.), a 24-year-old Latina mother, arrives at the community hospital's emergency department with her 4-year-old daughter, Maria. S.G. speaks broken English, and none of the nurses who speak Spanish are currently on duty. The nurse is able to determine that Maria has not been eating for the last several days. S.G. says that she has tried to make her daughter drink, but Maria refuses. On physical examination, Maria has sluggish skin turgor, is lethargic, and does not communicate with her mother or the nurse. Her vital signs are T 39.6°C (103.3°F), P 125 and irregular, R 30 and shallow, and BP 86/58. Maria's throat is reddened, and lung auscultation reveals bilateral fine crackles. When the nurse explains to S.G. that an IV line needs to be placed in Maria's arm, S.G. says it can't be done until her husband arrives. When Mr. G arrives, he speaks very little English and is skeptical of the need for IV placement. Maria is diagnosed with dehydration, strep throat, and pneumonia, requiring her to be admitted to the hospital.

1. List some additional assessment data that should be collected on Maria and her family before her admission to the hospital.

2. List a minimum of four cultural factors, including rationales for each, the nurse should take into consideration while assessing Maria and planning for her care.

3. Identify the most important nursing intervention to be implemented initially, to ensure culturally competent patient-centered care. Describe ways in which the nurse can implement the intervention identified

The given case here is identified to be of a Lationo Spanish family that has different culture values and belief than the normal regional values. There are several cultural factoprs that needs to be cared for while assessing and providing treatment to Maria in this case.

a. Language is the very crucial factor that is to be considered. The family spoke very little English and were mainly the Spanish speakers, the nurse should take this into consideration and communicate with them appropriately in clear, simple and adequate statements.

b. The Latino culture mostly is derived towards herbal and natural medicine, and they also avoid any needle percing activities and that is identified when the parents prevent IV adminsitration to their daughter. This factor should be taken into consideration.

c. Lationo culture mostly involves kindness, respect, modesty and relationship building, the nurse should consider these factors in care.

d. Moreover, the family has different cultural values, their opinion through patient centred care should be taken into consideration and should be involved in care planning.
