A distant galaxy is simultaneously rotating and receding from the earth. As the drawing shows, the galactic center is receding from the earth at a relative speed of UG = 1.70 x 106 m/s. Relative to the center, the tangential speed is vT = 5.00 105 m/s for locations A and B, which are equidistant from the center. When the frequencies of the light coming from regions A and B are measured on earth, they are not the same and each is different than the emitted frequency of 5.80 x 1014 Hz. Find the measured frequency for the light from each of the following.

A distant galaxy is simultaneously rotating and receding from the earth. As the drawing shows, the galactic center is receding from the earth at a relative speed of uG = 2.20 × 106 m/s. Relative to the center, the tangential speed is vT = 0.550 × 106 m/s for locations A and B, which are equidistant from the center. Consider a spiral galaxy that is moving directly away from Earth with a speed V=3.24*10^5 at its center. The galaxy is also rotating about its center such that points in the spiral arms are moving with a soeed V=5.750*10^5m/s relative to the center. If light with a frequency of 7.308*10^14Hz is emitted in both arms of the galaxy, what frequency is detected by astronomers observing the arm that is moving (a) toward and (b) away from Earth? The discovery of pulsars –rotating neutron stars that generate regular pulses of radiation at their spin rate- was fortuitous. A group of astrophysicists from Cambridge University lead by Anthony Hewish was looking for quasars (these are extremely bright, compact and remote objects that emit up to a thousand times as much light as our entire galaxy). For that purpose the research group designed a radio-telescope that was built on the flat fields surrounding Cambridge in central England. This telescope did...
