In the figure, the particles have charges q1 = -q2 = 750 nC and q3 = -q4 = 93 nC, and distance a = 7.0 cm. What are the (a) x and (b) y components of the net electrostatic force on particle 3?

Answer #1

x - component of the of the net force on particle 3 is,

F3x = F1x + F2x + F4x

the horizontal force due to charge q1 is zero ,so net force

F3x = 0 + F2*cos45 + F4x

Distance between charge q2 and q3

r23 = sqrt[(0.07)2 + (0.07)2]

r23 = 0.098 m

F3x = k*q2*q3*cos45/(r23)2 + k*q3*q4/(r34)2

F3x = 9*109*750*10-9*93*10-9*cos45/(0.098)2 + 9*109*93*10-9*93*10-9/(0.07)2

F3x = 0.0620 N

F3y = -F1y + F2y + F4y

F3y = -k*q1*q3/(r13)2 + k*q2*q3*sin45/(r23)2 + 0

F3y = 9*109*750*10-9*93*10-9/(0.07)2 + 9*109*750*10-9*93*10-9/(0.098)2

F3y= 0.1742 N
