The question is asking you to find the acceleration in the x direction. Because we're interested in finding the acceleration only in the x direction, we're also interested in the forces only in the x direction.
F = ma
Fx = max
WHERE:
Fx = forces in the x direction
m = mass
ax = acceleration in the x direction

If you look at the figure, there are only two forces in the x direction. The first force is the x component force 4.0 N acting to the right, denoted as +4.0 N. The second force is the 2.0 N force acting to the left, denoted as -2.0 N.
Fx = max
4.0 N - 2.0 N = (2.5 kg)*ax
2.0 N = (2.5 kg)*ax
ax = 0.8 m/s^2
