The polymerization of terephthalic acid and diol produces a resin that consists of alternating ethylene diol and terephthalic acid monomers. The basic reactivity is that the hydroxyl groups on the diol will attack the electrophilic carbonyl carbons in the acid, resulting in alternating joining of the acid and diol to generate the following polymer:
