Why is it a good idea to extend your bare hand forward when you are getting ready to catch a fast-moving baseball?

Answer:So you can pull your hand back, increasing the time to slow the ball thus deceasing the force.

It is because as we pull back our hands the time of contact increases so that the force acting on hands decreases as impulse is constant. As force decreases the jerk on our hands is less and our hands becomes safe.
