An outbreak is a sudden increase in occurance of disease in a particular time and place . It may affect a small and localised  group or thousands of people across an whole continent.There are a number of steps developed to investigate disease outbreaks such as ;

-identify the group of ill patients are normal for the time of year , geographic area etc ;

-confirm the diagnosis related to the outbreak

-Make a case definition inorder to bring out who or what is included as a case

-identify the spread of outbreak through information technology.

- Develop a hypothesis that is what is the cause of outbreak

-study the hypothesis by collecting data and analysing the data

-make improvements in hypothesis and study further

-implement prevention and control systems

-Extend findings to greater communities

In outbreaks identified through notifiable diseases surveillance reports are often linked to laboratory results and identify diagnosis directly.
