Last year, during an investigation of the time spent reading emails on a daily basis, researchers found that on Monday the average time was 50 minutes. Office workers claim that with the increased spam and junk mail, this time has now increased. To conduct a test, a sample of 25 employees is selected, with the following results: sample mean = 51.05 minutes and sample standard deviation = 4.42 minutes. Test the hypothesis that the time has increased from last year using a significance of 0.05.

Time reading emails has not increased; p = 0.1233

Time reading emails has increased; p = 0.1233

Time reading emails has not increased; p = 0.2465

Time reading emails has increased; p = 0.2465

Time reading emails has increased since 51.05 > 50

Answer #1

We will use z test to test difference in mean

H0: The time has increased from last year

x1 = 51.05

x2 = 50

= Z

s1=s2=4.42

n1=n2=25

z = 1.05/ 1.25 = 0.84

From z table We find that the probability of probability of a z-score being 0.84 or less is about 0.02

This is more than significance of 0.05

Hence hypothesis is rejected. Time has not increased significantly.

    Complete entire problem, showing ALL work so the learner can transpose into a notebook. 3. (SECTION 11.2) Spam e-mail has become a serious and costly nuisance. An office manager believes that the average amount of time spent by office workers reading and deleting sparn is NOT 25 minutes per day. To test this beliel, he takes a random sample of 18 workers and measures the amount of time each spends reading and deleting spam. The results are listed here. If...

    Question 10 (0.75 points) A study showed that in a certain month, the mean time spent per visit to Facebook was 19.5 minutes. Assume the standard deviation of the population is 8 minutes. Suppose that a simple random sample of 100 visits in that month has a sample mean of 21.13 minutes. A social scientist is interested in knowing whether the mean time of Facebook visits has increased. Perform the hypothesis test and compute the P-value. Write down your P-value....

    Suppose that a recent article stated that the mean time spent in jail by a first-time convicted burglar is 2.5 years. A study was then done to see if the mean time has increased in the new century. A random sample of 27 first-time convicted burglars in a recent year was picked. The mean length of time in jail from the survey was four years with a standard deviation of 1.9 years. Suppose that it is somehow known that the...

    Spam Filters* Spam filters try to sort your incoming e-mails, deciding which are real messages and which are unwanted. One method used is a point system. The filter reads each incoming e-mail and assigns points according to the sender, the subject, key words in the message, and so on. The higher the point total the more likely it is that the message is unwanted. The filter has a cutoff value for the point total; any message rated lower than that...
