Chi-square tests are used to check independence between two categorical variables.

Example of a chi-square test: We want to check whether the prevalence of depression (BDI-II scores >=14) and Gender are independent.

Prevalence of depression has two levels - Yes or No
Gender has two levels - Male or Female

We want to check if there are gender differences in self-reported symptoms of depression, therefore, chi-square test is used.  

Null Hypothesis: Gender and prevalence of depression are independent

The results in the article indicate that the prevalence of depression was significantly higher in females than males (35% vs 22% respectively)

2. For this question, we need to know about the hypothesis tests performed earlier. But the major difference in the selection of the hypothesis tests are the nature of the variables used to compare. In this case, we have two categorical variables. If we have two quantitative variables, we use correlation testing.
