Question

10. A car is being driven along a straight, level highway at 71.582 mph. The driver taps on the brakes but notices no response. He tries to brake again and realizes the brakes are completely out. There is a field next to the highway with tall grass. The driver veers into the tall grass traveling in a straight line. The car eventually comes to a stop. Later it is measured that the car traveled 184 meters through the grass. How much time did it take for the vehicle to come to a stop after leaving the road? Answer: 11.5 seconds

Answer #1

initial velocity = V0 = 71. 582mph = 32 m/sec

displacement = S = 184 m

final velocity = Vf = 0 m/sec ( stop)

time = t = ?

displacement = Avearage velocity x time

S = ( VF + V0 ) / 2 * T

184 = (32 / 2 ) * t

time = t = 184 x 2 / 32 = 11.5 sec

    The driver of a car of mass M which is moving along a straight road with initial speed v0 sees a deer in her headlights, and reacts quickly, lifting her foot of the gas and applying the brake pedal with maximum force. The anti-lock brakes cause the largest possible static friction force to be applied on the tires by the road, which continue to roll so the car does not skid. The coefficient of static friction between the tires and...

    An automobile is traveling on a long, straight highway at a steady 75.0 mi/h when the driver sees a wreck 190 m ahead. At that instant, she applies the brakes (ignore reaction time). Between her and the wreck are two different surfaces. First there is 100 m of ice, where the deceleration is only 1.30 m/s2 . From then on, it is dry concrete, where the deceleration is a more normal 8.00 m/s2 . a). What was the car’s speed...

    a car is traveling at a constant speed of Vo on a straight, level road. After the brakes are applied at t=0 seconds, the motion can be approximated by: x=t^3/100-t^2 +17t where x is the distance traveled in meters and t is the time in seconds. Determine: A the initial velocity (Vo), B. the time required for the car to stop, C. The distance required for the car to stop, and D. The maximum deceleration during braking.
