Lets say there is a variable: %age of city' total area in-habitated. This drives both : proportion of paved ground relative to grassy ground , and the air pollution ( since higher area in-habitated means more strain on the resources and thus more pollution.

Hence, this "%age of city' total area in-habitated" can be a latent/hidden variable which was responsible for increase in both the other variables i.e. lurking variable.
