Question

S8. Why is the folloruing situation impossibler An apparatus is designed so that steam initially at T-150°C, P= 1.00 atm. and V-0.500 m in a piston-cylinder apparatus under- goes a process in which (1) the volume remains constant and the pressure drops to 0.870 atm, followed by (2) an expansion in which the pressure remains constant and the volume increases to 1.00 m, followed by (3) a return to the initial conditions. It is important that the pressure of the gas never fall below 0.850 atm so t he piston will support a delicate and very expensive part of the appara- tus. Without such support, the delicate apparatus can be severely damaged and rendered useless. When the design is turned into a working prototype, it operates perfectly

An ideal monatomic gas is contained in a cylinder with a movable piston so that the gas can do work on the outside world, and heat can be added or removed as necessary. The figure shows various paths that the gas might take in expanding from an initial state whose pressure, volume, and temperature are , , and respectively. The gas expands to a state with final volume . For some answers it will be convenient to generalize your results...

Gas Laws: Show all work, including significant figures and units, leading to your answer. 2. A scientist discovers a filled gas cylinder in an industrial facility, but cannot identify it directly because its labelling has been worn away. She determines that when a sample of 1.90 g of gas is transferred to a container, the gas occupies a volume of 2.30 L at a temperature of 298 K and a pressure of 1.00 atm.
