2. How should dehydration be treated?

  • Assess the severity of dehydration.
  • Provide oral rehydration therapy if possible and intravenous fluid replacement if the dehydration is severe.
  • Administer isotonic solutions for isotonic dehydration, hypotonic solutions for hypertonic dehydration and hypertonic solutions for hypotonic dehydration.
  • Monitor electrolyte values and administer medications to treat imbalance, if present
  • Isotonic solutions are 0.9% Sodium Chloride, 5% Dextrose in water and Ringer's Lactate solution.
  • Hypotonic solutions are 0.45% sodium chloride and 0.225% sodium chloride.
  • Hypertonic solutions are 3% sodium chloride, 5% sodium chloride, 10% dextrose in water, 5% dextrose in 0.9% Nacl and 5% dextrose in Ringer's Lactate solution.
