The nasogastric tube is inserted via a nostril to the stomach for feeding.The nurse can confirm it in the following ways

  • Place the open end of the NG tube to a bowel of water,no bubbles indicates it is in stomach and presence of bubbles induces it is in respiratory tract
  • Aspirate :in case of it is present in stomach the residual gastric content will be present
  • Auscultation:with 10ml syringe by instilling air can be heard at the stomach on ausculting a whooshing sound can be heard
  • pH test: with a blue litmus paper the pH should be within (0 to 5.5)1 is a way to confirm or 1.5 to 3.5 is the actual normal gastric pH
  • Chest X ray is a confirmatory procedure to locate the exact site
