1. A magnetic field of 0.42 T in the positive x-direction is applied in the white region (see figure above). Oxygen ions (q = -2e, m = 2.66 * 10^-26 kg) enter the region between the capacitor plates (plates A and B lie parallel to the xz-plane) with velocity 5.3*10^5 m/s in the direction shown and move through the plates undeflected. After they get out of the capacitor at slit S, only the magnetic field is present. (Refer to the coordinate system shown when answering the questions below. Gravitational force is negligible.)

A) Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on the ions.

B) Use the result of A) to find the magnitude and direction of the electric field between the plates of the capacitor.

C) In which position would you put the detector of these ions 1, 2, or 3? Explain. How far from the slit S are the oxygen ions detected?
