Operating income computed using variable costing will be lower
Under variable costing fixed manufacturing overhead is treated as a period cost and expensed in the period incurred.
However under absorption costing fixed manufacturing overhead is treated as a product cost and included in cost of inventory.
As a result, when inventories increase, fixed manufacturing overhead will be deferred in inventories and not expensed till product is sold resulting in higher operating income.
