1) A nation fast food chain claims that the waiting time of customers for service is normally distributed with a mean of 3 minutes or less. a) State the Hypothesis to show conclude the average waiting time for service is less than 3 minutes. b) Choose a level of a. Use a = 0.05 for this problem. c) To test the hypothesis, you take a sample of 50 customers and records the wait time. The data appear in the Waiting Time worksheet of the HW1 data workbook on Moodle. Collect data and calculate necessary statistics to test the hypothesis. d) Sketch the sampling distribution. Include the critical value and test statistic e) Draw a conclusion and report that in the problem context.

Answer #1

Part (a)

Let mu be the population mean waiting time.

to test, H_0: mu=3 vs. H_1:muleq 3 at a-0.05 level of significance.

The test statistic is given by,

SIVn

Under null hypothesis, t sim t_{n-1}
where, overline{X} is the mean of the sample of 50 observations, mu_0 =3, s is the sample standard deviation and n = 50

The value of the test statistic is obtained as, t = -1.7658

the critical value is given as -t0.05:49 -1 .6765 =

Since observed t statistic < critical value for the lower tailed test, we shall reject the null hypothesis, thus stating that mean waiting time is less than 3 minutes.

The sampling distribution is sketched as follows,

2 0 1 2

The first tick is the test statistic and the second tick is the lower critical value.

    The Burger Dome waiting line model studies the waiting time of customers at its fast-food restaurant. Burger Dome's single-server waiting line system has an arrival rate of 0.75 customers per minute and a service rate of 1 customer per minute. Adapt the Black Sheep Scarves spreadsheet shown below to simulate the operation of this waiting line. Make sure to use the random values for both interarrival and service times generated in the worksheet_12-23. Assuming that customer arrivals follow a Poisson...

    Recent research indicates that the effectiveness of antidepressant medication is directly related to the severity of the depression (Khan, Brodhead, Kolts & Brown, 2005). Based on pretreatment depression scores, patients were divided into four groups based on their level of depression. After receiving the antidepressant medication, depression scores were measured again and the amount of improvement was recorded for each patient. The following data are similar to the results of the study. Low Moderate High Moderate Moderately Severe Severe 1.2...

    A sociologist claims that children spent more time watching television in 1981 than children do today. A study was conducted in 1981 to find the time that children watched television on weekdays. Recently, a similar study was conducted. The results of these studies (in hours per weekday) are shown below. Assume the population standard deviation is 0.7 for 1981 and 0.7 for today.
