The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the U.S. government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

HHS is responsible for almost a quarter of all federal outlays and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined.

Organisational structure of HHS :-

HHS has 11 operating divisions, including eight agencies in the U.S. Public Health Service and three human services agencies, which administer a wide variety of health and human services and conduct life-saving research for the nation. These agencies protect and serve all Americans.

11operating divisions of Department of Health and Human Services are :-

- ACF

Administration for Children and Families - it's function is to provide assistance with welfare , child support , enforcement , adoption assistance, foster care ,child care and child abuse.

- ACL

Administration for Community Living - it's function is to provide general policy coordination while retaining programmatic operations specific to the needs of population served .

- AHRQ

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality - it's function is to enhance the quality , appropriateness ,and effectiveness of health care services and access to care by supporting research , demonstration projects , developing guidelines etc.

- CDC

Center for Disease Control and Prevention - it's main goal is to protect public health and safety through the control and prevention of disease , injury and disability

- NIH

National Institutes of Health - it conducts research through its intramural research project and provides major biomedical research funding to non - NIH research facilities .

- FDA

Food and Drug Administration - it is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the control and supervision of food safety , tobacco products , dietary supplements , vaccines etc .

- HRSA

Health Resources and Services Administration - for improving access to health care services for people who are uninsured , isolated , medically vulnerable .

- CMS

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - it administers medicare ,medicaid program , child health insurance program and health insurance portability standard , responsibilities include the administrative simplification standard from HIPPA .

- IHS

Indian Health Service - is responsible for providing direct medical and public services to federally recognised natives.

- ATSDR

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry - it's function is to minimise human health risk associated with exposure to hazardous substances .
