Question

10. Object A has a charge of+g. If it were replaced with an object that has a charge of -q, how (1 point) would the electric field at point P be affected? OThe magnitude would decrease, while the direction stays the same. OThe magnitude would increase, while the direction stays the same. OThe direction would reverse, while the magnitude stays the same. OThe direction would rotate clockwise by 90, while the magnitude stays the same.

Answer #1

10.

Result : The direction would reverse, while the magnitude stays the same.

Explanation:

As we know that , the electric field by an object (having charge q) at a point situated at distance r is given by:

E = kq/r2

If object A has the positive charge , then the magnitude of electric field at point P is given by:

E = k|q|/r2 where r is the distance between object A and point P.

Its direction will be towards point P.

Now if object A has the negative charge(-q) , then the magmitude of electric field at point P is given by:

E = k|q|/r2

While its direction will be towards object A.

Hence if we replace object A with an object of charge (-q) then the direction would reverse ,while the magnitude stays the same.
