Chapter 4

Q 1. An emerging economy is the one that has several characteristics of a developed economy but does not satisfy all the criteria to be a developed economy. For example - India and China are considered as the top emerging economies of the world.

Characteristics of an emerging economy:

  • Rapid economic growth due to changes in markets. technology, social practices etc.
  • Volatile in nature
  • Increasing labor force

Impacts of the emerging economy on global business:

  • Boost to local living standards in emerging economies due to the flow of consumer goods in some of the farthest countries
  • Increase in global production of goods and services
  • Opportunities for international businesses to expand in emerging markets
  • Businesses can leverage the demographic dividend of the emerging economies
  • Allows businesses in developing countries to become part of international production networks and supply chains

Q 2. In the market economy, all the decisions regarding production and consumption are determined by the market forces of demand and supply. While in the case of the central economy, all such decisions are taken by the government or central authority.
In a market economy,

  • What to produce is determined by consumer's preferences.
  • How to produce is determined by producers seeking profits.
  • For whom to produce is determined by the purchasing power.

In the central economy, the decisions regarding what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce are taken by the central authority. It is more related to socialism and communism.

Chapter 5

Q 4. Relativism and normativism fall under organizational ethics. Relativism refers to the ethics of a particular society or group. Under relativism, right and wrong are subjective. On the other hand, normativism refers to universal ethics, not related to any society or culture. Normativism is more related to the application of ethics on a global scale. Both the concepts become all the more relevant when an organization operates on an international level. For a national organization, it is easier in terms of understanding the ethics of a specific group or culture while in international organizations, it can be difficult to follow the ethics of a specific group. Hence, international organizations follow normativism.

For example - serving tip in China is looked down upon and people are advised never to tip the servers in China. But, tipping is very common in the US. Hence, this is a part of relativism.
