20 fired for looking at NFL player’s medical records

Twenty employees of 559-bed Shands Jacksonville (Fla.) Medical Center were fired last week for viewing medical records of and talking publicly about former Jacksonville Jaguars player Richard Collier, who was hospitalized there with gunshot wounds.

Hospital spokeswoman Kelly Brockmeier would not comment on the firings but said all employees are aware of the hospital’s strict policies on violations of patient privacy laws. “From the day you step in the door, it doesn’t matter if you’re a janitor or a doctor, there’s constant training on it,” she said.

Doug Martin, spokesman for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Florida Council 79, which represents the fired workers, said the workers’ conduct included peeking at Collier’s files out of curiosity and advising people inside the hospital which floor Collier’s room was on. “To what is alleged, firing is a disproportionate response,” Martin said. Collier's "identity was not stolen. Information was not leaked to the media. Police investigations were not compromised.”

Collier, 27, played sporadically as offensive tackle for the Jaguars since 2006. The second-string player made national news when he was shot 14 times on Sept. 2 while waiting in a car outside the Jacksonville apartment building, and surgeons later had to amputate his left leg. -- by Joe Carlson

Answer #1

\rightarrowPatient confidentiality is one of the most important pillars in the hospital field.Protecting the patient personal/privacy matters of the patient is not a just matter but we are respeting the patient morale.

It is one of the essential policies that we have to respect and retain the patient matters confidentially and manintain a important bond and trust between the hosptall and the individual.

\rightarrow \rightarrowIn the present scenario we are discusing regarding the former Jacksonville Jaguars player Richard Collier.

Here we can see the the ethical violation done by hospital staff of Shands Jacksonville Medical center.

While Collier was hospitalized, his family asked both the media and even the Jaguars to respect his privacy while he was hospitalized.

But unfortunately some views the patient medical records and talking publicly about the former patient/player Richard Collier

He we can see a breach of duty done by the hospital staff as breach of patient confidential matter/breach of patient confidentiality to the public.

As an organizational policy patient confidentiality is protected under safe law and we have to respect the patient confidential matters and maintan it as confidential and will not disclose to the third party with out the consent.

Patient confidentiality is protected under state law.

If a patient's private information is disclosed without authorization and causes some type of harm to the patient

The patient has the right to have the cause of action against the medical provider for malpractice, invasion of privacy,or other related torts.

Here we can see for this torts or the disclosure of the information/crime the management has taken action against twenty hospital workers and lost their job, accused of breaking federal privacy rules by accessing the patient medical records (NFT player Richard Collier)
