Dividends will be found out by the following equation:

Ending retained earnings = Beginning retained earnings + Net income - Dividends

Putting the given values in the above equation, we get,

$158000 = $125000 + $40000 - Dividends

$158000 = $165000 - Dividends

Dividends = $165000 - $158000

Dividends = $7000
