Question

Chapter 18, Problem 006 On a linear X temperature scale, water freezes at -148.0ox and boils at 316.0oX. On a linear Y temperature scale, water freezes at -89.00°Y and boils at -26.00°Y. A temperature of 42.00°Y corresponds to what temperature on the X scale? Number Units the tolerance is +/-2%

Answer #1

The following is the general relation between 2 temperature scales X and Y

rac{y_B-y_F}{x_B-x_F}=rac{y-y_F}{x-x_F}

where YB and YF are boiling and freezing points on Y scale and similarly TR and TA are boiling and freezing points on X scale. This is obtained by equating the slope of FG and FB.

で(x, y)

For our problem

x_B=316, x_F=-148, y_B=-26, y_F=-89, y=42, x=?

Insert the values

63 131 464 148

131 ×ー-148 816.8

    RANKINE TEMPERATURE SCA E Like the Kelvin scale, the Rankine scale is an absolute temperature scale: Absolute zero is zero degrees Rankine (0 R). However, the units of this scale are the same size as those on the Fahrenheit scale F) rather than the Celsius scale (C) Given that water at standard presure freezes at O C which corresponds to 32-F and that it boils at 100 C which comesponds to 212 F. calculate the temperature diference AT in degr...

    Chapter 12, Problem 008 If a non-human civilization were to develop on Saturn's largest moon, Titan, its scientists might well develop a temperature scale based on the properties of methane which is much more abundant on the surface than water. Methane freezes at-182.6°C on Titan, and boils at-155.2°C, Taking the boiling point of methane as 100.0°M (degrees Methane) and its freezing point as 0°M, what temperature on the Methane scale corresponds to the absolute zero point of the Kelvin scale?...

    Chapter 18, Problem 029 In a solar water heater, energy from the Sun is gathered by water that circulates through tubes in a rooftop collector. The solar radiation enters the collector through a transparent cover and warms the water in the tubes; this water is pumped into a holding tank. Assume that the efficiency of the overall system is 14.0% (that is, 86% of the incident solar energy is lost from the system). What collector area is necessary to raise...
