Answer #1

d) If the supply curve of the slave is infinitely elastic with P=200 , it means the supply curve is horizontal (parallel) to the x axis. It depics that at the same price of 200, infinite number of slaves can be captured and freed respectively as there is no change in price due to infinite elasticity of supply curve. The 'redemption programme' would require to pay a fixed price for 'n' number of slaves. This would mean low funds can be helpful to free many slaves.

e) Now if the situation is different and the supply of slaves have some elasticity i.e supply curve is less elastic ( taking number of slaves freed on x axis and price on y axis), then we will have to pay more than previous for every other slave that is to be freed. In other words, an increase in price also would not help much to increase the number of slaves to be freed.Hence, here the Redemption Programme will be opposed because here it will absorb more and more funds resulting in very less number of free slaves i.e It will be very costly to save an additional unit of labour from the slave market.

The answers can be substantiated by following diagrams for each part.Part D: Y 200 Price P R o 10 20 30 No. of Purchases / Slaves freedPart E: YA Price Less Elastic Case • Shows higher increase in price brings X relatively less increase in No. of freed slaves.
