1. Acetylation followed by reduction is more preferred over direct alkylation, because alkylation will make the system more activated and therefore, more than one alkyl groups might get introduced. So, we'll get mixture of products. But, such situation doesn't arise in acetylation, as acetylation deactivates the aromatic system.
