Know Your Meds
The patient is giving Sandy, the CMA, a list of medications and asked that she renew his duloxetine. Sandy does not see it on his list and mentions in the notes that the patient needs to renew Dexilant. When the doctor comes out of the room, he calls Sandy to his office to explain that the wrong medication was noted in the chart. What is the difference between the two medications? What can Sandy do to ensure that an error like this does not happen again? Have you come across medications that sound alike?

The two medicine enlisted here that is duloxetine and dexilant. Duloxetine is a serotonin norepinepherine reuptake inhibitor drug used to treat depression, anxiety issues and firbomyalgia. Dexilant is on other hand a proton pump inhibitor that is used to treat GERD ans stomach acidity. Both the drugs are very different derivatives with different actions and use.

The nurse here should make sire she achieves more knwoledge regardinf medicine names and their use. To avoid such error in fitire practice she sjould be thorough with the medication names and also confirm it with the doctor or clinician during chart preperation.
