There is some controversy about many of the different types of drugs used to treat osteoporosis. One of the most popular osteoporosis drugs is Boniva. Sally Fields was a major spokesperson for this drug and in the ads claimed that Boniva could reverse bone loss. In 2012 the FDA stepped in and said that that claim was not supported by misleading evidence and was misleading. Boniva is a bisphosphonate drug and this category of drugs has been brought into questions because of some reported side effects and adverse effects. Hormone replacement therapy was a commonly used treatment for osteoporosis which has since been called into question because of the increased risk of cancer. So what do you think? Do a little bit more research on the pros and cons of these common drugs used to treat osteoporosis. Would you recommend these drugs to someone you know? Osteoporosis is the formation of holes or pores in the bone resulting in easy breakage or discontinuity of bone, increasing the risk of fracture.It is best to prevent the bone loss and Boniva is one of the better choice to treat this condition though it has some side effects. The main pros of this medication are

• It can prevent bone loss
• Can strengthen the weak bones
• Can greatly reduce the rate of fracture

The cons are

• Gastrointestinal problems like abdominal pain and diarrhea
• pain (joint,head,muscle ,limbs)
• Changes in vision
• Respiratory issues like dyspnea

This drug could be recommended to others when the benefits outweighs the risk or side effects. Certainly when one is diagnosed with osteoporosis and if Boniva is the right and recommended drug then there is no second thought to make a decision. This is because one can lead a quality life ahead.

The other treatment available are

• Acupuncture to relieve pain
• Diet modifications having adequate calcium and vitamin D supplements in the food
• Mild exercise
• Herbal supplements which can enhance estrogen production
