4. Speed of Light. Light travels through space at an incredible speed, 186,282 miles per second. How far does light travel through space in one hour? (This is the speed of light in miles per hour.) How far does light travel in one year? (This distance is a light-year.) 5. Interplanetary Communication. The average distance between the planet Mars and the Earth is 100 million miles. We communicate with robots on Mars with radio signals, which travel through space at the speed of light. How long do the radio signals need to cross this distance? Given this time lag, do you think we can control robots directly using remote control? 6. Interstellar Travel. Consider a solar system that lies 10 light years away from us. Imagine that we could launch a spacecraft out of our Solar System at a speed of 100,000 miles per hour (about 3x the speed of Voyager I & II). How long (in years) would the spacecraft need to reach this solar system? (Given this result, we would need to make tremendous advances in space propulsion to travel to the stars in humanly reasonable amounts of time.)
