while driving behind a car traveling at 3.so m/s, you notice that one of the cars tires has a small hemispherical bump on ts rim as shown in the following figure. Bump (a) Explain why the bump, from your viewpoint behind the car, executes simple harmonic motien This answer has notbeen graded yet (b) It the radi of the cars tires are 0.325 m, what is the bumps period of osollation (in s? (c) what in You hang a spring with spmg costant k-100 N/m rom the rear view minor of yourer, what motion with the same period as the bump on the tire? is the mass (in kg) that needs to be hung from this spring to produce simple harmonic kg (d) What would be the maximum speed of the hanging mass in your car (in m/s) if you intially puled the mass down 8.00 cm beyond equilbrium before releasing (Enter the vertical compenent of the speed only.) m/s

Answer #1

a)

The bump will only appear to go up and down. Hence SHM

b)

v = rw
3.5 = 0.325 x w
w = 10.77 rad/s

w = 2 pi/T

T = 6.28/10.77 = 0.583 s

c)

k/m = w^2

m = k/w^2 = 100/10.77^2 = 0.862 kg

d)

Vmax = Aw

= 0.08 x 10.77 = 0.862 m/s
