for my stats project, the topic is : exercise vs. weight loss.
population: adult supermarket shoppers.
research variables: weight loss and soft drinks(explanatory).
research question: what factors contribute to weight loss?
hypothesis: Positive correlation
but I don't know if is weak, moderate or strong.
the survey questions are somewhat like: how many times a week u go to the gym or exercise?
or how many times you cook at home per week?

My questions are: can you tell me if my hypothesis has either a moderate or strong correlation? and why?

Answer #1

Question asked:

Can you tell me if my hypothesis has either a moderate or strong correlation?

Answer:

Step !::

From the answers to survey questions: Tabulate the values of X and Y

Step 2:

Calculate the values of:

(i) Mean of X: \bar{x}

(ii) Mean of Y: \bar{y}

(iii) SD of X: \sigma _{x}

(iv) SD of Y: \sigma _{y}

Step 3:

Calculate the Correlation Coefficient r using the formula:

r=\frac{\sum (x-\bar{x})(y-\bar{y})}{n\sigma _{x}\sigma _{y}}

Step 4:
If the absolute value of r calculated is near 0.5, we infer that our hypothesis has a moderate correlation.

If the absolute value of r calculated is near 1.0, we infer that our hypothesis has a strong correlation.

If the absolute value of r calculated is near 0, we infer that our hypothesis has no correlation.

    Tens Tips for changing health behaviors After years of working with health science students to help older adults change health behaviors, it would be wonderful if I could offer the reader a simple formula for increasing the probability of success. Unfor- tunately, I fall victim to the “kitchen sink” syndrome that I think also afflicts the PRECEDE model just described. There are many factors that can influence the success or failure of an individual’s attempt to change a health behavior,...
