Information technology has a transforming role in the health care field, as it has a number of new tools, software, and devices. This transformation of technology has an important role in nursing care and the health care information technology is also referred to “nursing informatics.”

Nursing informatics plays an important role in healthcare practice settings by helping to organize and apply data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. The continuum of data- wisdom includes data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. The data to wisdom continuum represents how the nurses utilize facts to take decisions and provide better care. The continuum flashes light into the use of nursing informatics to support the various phases of understanding, decision-making, and evidence-based practice.

The data is the lowest level in the continuum and it denotes the different group of details related to a specific situation, patient, or population. Data is the isolated facts that can be utilized by any observer.

The information is in the next level on the continuum just above the data. Information is the processing and organizing of data to more manageable structures by interpreting the meanings of individual data points. (HER) electronic health records are the best example of the second level of the continuum, the Information.

After information level, the next upper level in the continuum is the knowledge. When the information is synthesized or processed to determine the formal relationships and interconnections, knowledge arises. In nursing care, the decision support system operates at the knowledge level.

The highest level in the continuum is the wisdom and it is the application of knowledge complex clinical issues with a view to professional ethics.

In nursing practice, the technology is used by the nurses to deliver efficient care to the patients, which will in turn results in a better outcome. In data to wisdom continuum, the information technology helps the nurses to take decisions effectively without missing the facts about the patient. The wisdom level is not an independent aspect of the computer or the nurse. It is a joint venture. The data, information and knowledge help to reach an ultimate level of wisdom. Information technology can be incorporated into the healthcare practice to provide better care and also helps to minimize human errors.
