A lot of accounting courses have ratio analysis as a topic within managerial, not financial accounting. Which area should ratio analysis be? Why?

Ratio analysis should be part of Managerial Accounting. Even though the base for ratio analysis is Financial Accounting Ratio analysis is more of analytical tool used to understand the financial statements. Ratio analysis are used as a health indicator of a firm based on Financial statements reported. Ratio Analysis does not involve any accounting and used as tool to judge financial statements.

Ratio analysis is used by different users based on their requirements

  • Shareholders use it for understanding the financial health of the firm and form an opinion whether investment should be made or not
  • Bankers users it granting financial facilities
  • Internal Management team can use it as part of improving the performance and tracking competitor performance
  • Industry people track it to gain insights of the business

Hence Ratio analysis is part of Managerial Accounting.
