The Act on Patient Protection and Affordable Care (ACA) has been signed into law on 23 March 2010. The legislation was one of the most important health care overhauls after Medicare and Medicaid. The law seeks to control healthcare costs by penalizing hospitals that have patients re-admitted shortly after being discharged and requiring insurers that spend too much on overhead to reimburse customers for a portion of their premiums. However, Medicaid effectively allows physicians, hospitals and other healthcare providers to use a team approach to treat patients with Medicare.
