Chimney swifts is the birds that are supposed to be in the chimney and they nest in chimneys quite skillfully and successfully. Swifts may also nest in wells, and even on a sheltered brick wall of an abandoned building. These birds are American swifts that formerly nest in large hollow trees but human habitation eliminated large hollow trees, so the adaptive swifts began using the masonry chimneys that emerged. Due to this reason their name is altered from  American swifts to Chimney swifts.

Chimney swifts feed exclusively while in flight. They are primarily insectivores and forages on the wing. They feed on flying insects such as flies, ants, wasps, bees, whiteflies, aphids, scale insects, stoneflies and mayflies. Incubated by both parents, and the eggs hatch after 19 days. Baby chimney swifts are naked, blind and helpless when they hatch.Babies stay in the chimney about 30 days. Fledglings leave the nest after a month. When they leave the chimney each morning, they spend the entire day on the wing collecting thousands of mosquitoes, flies, gnats and flying termites. Males seem to be involved more often than females in extra-parental coöperation. The parents and visitors often remain as a unit throughout the nesting season and share the work of incubation, brooding, and feeding of the nestlings. The nests of tree swifts are tiny cups, barely large enough to hold the single egg. They are placed on small limbs, high up in trees, where they are subject to being moved about by the wind. The egg is glued to the bottom of the nest with the sticky saliva of the parent; this prevents the egg from being turned during incubation.
